Country:
Barreal lies in the Calingasta valley, at 180 km from San Juan city. It's a small town facing the tallest section of the Andes mountain range, including the Aconcagua (6,962 m high) and the Mount Mercedario (6,770 m high), and it's surrounded by the Ansilta mountain range and Sierra del Tontal.
Highlights:
:: Astronomical Complex El Leoncito: Barreal has one of the clearest skies in the world and one of the most important observatories in the South Cone was set up here. You can visit it during the day, or take the guided tour at night if you book in advance.
:: Pampa del Leoncito: located 40 km away, it's one of Barreal's main attractions. It's a white clay plain measuring 12 km of length and 6 km of width, where a lake dried out millions of years ago. It's a unique place to practice land sailing (windcar) in a three-wheeled cart, due to its size and wind conditions.
:: Cerro El Alcázar: the magnificent mount El Alcázar is a fantastic rock formation. From the top you can see a wonderful landscape of uncommon eroded sandstone shapes.
:: Reserva los Morrillos: is a private protected area where cave paintings, petroglyphs, and the remains of 17 mummies were found underground.
:: Outdoor activities: climbing, trekking, mountain bike, white water rafting, fishing, 4x4 trips, horseback riding, among others.
