The town of Humahuaca, located at 2939 m.a.s.l., is a sun drenched land, bursting with memories of elder cultures that left a strong influence in architecture, traditions, legends and beliefs related to nature and local heroes.
The rustic adobe houses, the narrow cobbled streets and the old colonial street lamps create the illusion that time has stopped.
There are various museums that illustrate handicrafts, paintings, sculptures, and other folk art. The most important works are weaving and pottery, famous for the artsy varied styles as well as helpful domestic use.
In the centre of the village is the Cabildo (Town Hall) with clock tower that chimes at 12 pm, after which a small door opens and a full-size replica of Saint Francisco Solano comes out and makes the sign of the cross.
On the western side of the main plaza stands the beautiful Cathedral, built in the XVII century. From the plaza, a staircase climbs to the imposing Independence Monument with an Indian statue exalting the virtues of the native cultures. The view from here on to the village and the mountainside is really beautiful. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD PDF FILE ON ARGENTINA - NORTH REGION
