Purmamarca

Purmamarca has pre-Hispanic origins and an urban layout which is centred around the main Church. It is located 3 km east from National Route 9 (65 km from San Salvador de Jujuy).

This village lies against the exceptional Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of Seven-colours), which has sedimentary rocks of different colours illustrating various geological eras.

Handicraft fairs also colour the village streets, with clothing, crafts, ponchos, and woven cloths available for purchase.

Attractions at Purmamarca are plentiful. Whether you choose to visit the Saint Rosa's church at the centre of town, built in 1648 and featuring original Cuzco School style paintings, or the neighbouring archaeological sites littered with cave paintings, you will undoubtedly be touched by local flavour. In addition, the Paseo de los Colorados marks for a gorgeous three-kilometre walk, featuring naturally sculpted red cliffs and a series of breathtaking views.

Another highlight is the vast Salinas Grandes (Great Salt Flats), which are easy accessible by local taxi from the main plaza. The drive goes over the Cuesta del Lipán, bordering cliffs through a deep canyon while reaching 4200 m until you get to this enormous salt pan.
