Situated at an altitude of 1260 metres above sea level, San Salvador de Jujuy is the highest provincial capital in Argentina. With an impressive location surrounded by fertile scenery, the city sits in a natural bowl with the fabulous multicoloured gorge of Quebrada de Humahuaca to the north.
Around the main square stands the Cabildo (Town Hall), the Cathedral and the Government House. Some of the finest pieces of sacred art in Argentina are to be found at the Provincial Archaeology Museum. At the Cathedral there is an 18th century wooden pulpit, recognized as one of the countries most important pieces of colonial Baroque artefact. The detailed interior carvings found in the Iglesia San Francisco are considered to be religious art masterpieces and are definitely worth a look.
19 km from San Salvador de Jujuy, and set within the magnificent valley of the Reyes River, are the Termas de Reyes (hot springs). A mountain road leads you to Yala Lagoons, an area surrounded by beautiful alder woods, making it an ideal spot for camping and hiking.
