El Chaltén

Located 220 km northwest of El Calafate, it is considered to be "The Trekking Capital of Argentina". This isolated village is surrounded by lakes, lagoons, mountains and glaciers allowing for a wide spectrum of outdoor activities. You don't need to be an expert to appreciate and enjoy this town. Unguided hikes are common as the trails are well marked and easily accessible. To the southwest of El Chaltén is Glaciar Torre, a massif that drains into the creamy coloured mountain lake of Laguna Torre. Towards the east, two other glaciers sit on the mountain: northeast Glaciar Piedras Blancas and southeast Glaciar de los Tres. These glaciers drain into the lagoons Piedras Blancas, de los Tres and Sucia.

Highlights:

:: Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy: the two most predominant peaks in the region of El Chaltén. Fitz Roy (named Chaltén by the natives) has a height of 3,405 m, and Cerro Torre 3,128 m above sea level. They are located inside Los Glaciares National Park and they represent a challenge for both recreational trekkers and for expert mountain climbers. An excellent glacier trek is available on Cerro Torre.

:: Trekking and Climbing: most of the treks in this region do not demand previous mountaineering experience. From El Chaltén you can take a number of hikes that can last from a few hours to a full day or overnight. Be sure to camp out in designated areas!

:: Lago Viedma: Close to El Chaltén is Lake Viedma, where one can take a boat excursion to the shores of Viedma glacier. A short hiking path allows one to get up-close and personal with the glacier. This tour departs from Bahía Túnel located on the northwest shores of the lake and can be booked through various agencies in El Chaltén.

:: Laguna del Desierto: 37 km north of El Chaltén, following Las Vueltas winding river, you will encounter this tranquil lake surrounded by forests, various trekking trails and a hanging glacier.

:: Horseback riding: Always an option for those needing a break from the challenging hikes. Simply another great way to experience the surrounding beauty.

THERE IS NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION OR ATM MACHINES IN EL CHALTÉN, SO MAKE SURE YOU FEED YOUR WALLET BEFORE HEADING THERE! THOSE WANTING TO KEEP IN TOUCH NEED NOT WORRY SINCE INTERNET CAFES AND LAND LINE TELEPHONE ARE AVAILABLE.
