Cuando llegas a Villa O’Higgins has llegado al final de la Carretera Austral, o si has hecho la travesía desde Argentina tu viaje por este mítico camino está a punto de empezar!

El verdadero final de la Carretera Austral de hecho está a 7km al sur de Villa O’Higgins en Bahía Bahamondes. No te olvides de tomar aquí una foto con la señal oficial!

Villa O’Higgins está situado cerca del impresionante Lago O’Higgins, uno de los mayores lagos de la Patagonia. La flora y fauna de la región es abundante con diferentes especies de aves y el huemul, en peligro de extinción. La Oficina de Turismo tiene un mapa básico con excelentes senderos por el día, por ejemplo al Cerro Santiago, Glaciar Mosco o Tigre y el sendero Altavista. Debes explorar alguno de estos!

Villa O’Higgins es también el punto de entrada para los gigantescos Campos de Hielo Sur. Inscríbete en un trekking sobre hielo o por qué no una expedición para vivirlas al máximo.

Diversos barcos salen desde Villa O’Higgins (Nov-Mar) para cruzar el lago a Candelario Mansilla (2,5 hs), y algunos de ellos continúan al imponente Glaciar O’Higgins con sus espectaculares paredes. Candelario Mansilla es el lugar para bajar si quieres hacer un trekking al famoso mirador del Glaciar O’Higgins o para iniciar la travesía a El Chaltén en Argentina. Prepárate para hacer 22km de caminata o bicicleta al Lago del Desierto, 30 minutos en barco y 1,5 hs en bus o 40km en bicicleta a El Chaltén (2 días de viaje). También es posible contratar un paquete a caballo con todo incluido proporcionado por un tour operador.

Consejo: la zona de Villa O’Higgins y El Chaltén es una de las mejores áreas de trekking de la Patagonia con una increíble cantidad de senderos. No hay cajeros automáticos.

Villa O’Higgins is located at the stunning O’Higgins Lake, one of the biggest lakes in Patagonia. The region’s wildlife is abundant with different species of birds and the endangered huemul deer. The tourist office has a basic map with great day hikes to e.g. the Cerro Santiago, Glaciar Mosco or Tigre and the Altavista trail. Definitely explore some of these!

Villa O’Higgins is also the entry point for the gigantic Southern Patagonian Ice Fields. Sign up for a (multi-day) ice hike or why not an adventurous expedition to experience them to the fullest.

Different boats leave from Villa O´Higgins (Nov-Mar) to cross the lake to Candelario Mansilla (2,5hrs), and some of them continue to the awe-inspiring O’Higgins glacier with its spectacular walls. Candelario Mansilla is the place to get off if you want to hike to the famous viewpoint of the O’Higgins glacier or to start the adventurous crossing to El Chaltén in Argentina. Get ready for 22km of hiking or biking to Lago del Desierto, a 30 min boat ride, and a 1,5 hr bus or 40km bike ride to El Chaltén. (2 day trip: accommodation available in Candelario Mansilla & Lago del Desierto). It’s also possible by horse with an all-in package provided by an operator.
