Futaleufú – Chile (Carretera Austral area)
This village is a world famous mecca for kayaking and rafting: experts rate its class 5+ rapids as within the top 3 in the world! It’s simply a must to grant yourself the extreme adrenaline rush by doing a rafting trip on the dazzlingly turquoise and wild Futaleufú river, or “big river” in native Mapuche. Rafting the river is possible for all levels: novice to expert! Kayaking the strongest rapids is a major challenge for experts. Just a mild walk away from the village, you can take a look at some of the ferocious rapids at the Gelvez Bridge.

But the Futaleufú region has so much more up its sleeve for you! This area with lush green forests and marvelous mountains begs to be explored! Put on your hiking boots or jump on a mountain bike or horse to discover Eagle’s Rock and the Lake Espolón Waterfalls at the Northwest Circuit, or the Las Escalas Circuit which follows the banks of the Futaleufú river.

The region’s towers and canyons also provide for heart-thumping canyoning, rock climbing and rappelling. To enjoy water in a calm way cruise the area’s lakes and more still rivers by kayak or canoe, or go for some topnotch fly fishing.
The nearby border crossing to Argentina, often used by travellers, connects Futaleufú with the area of Esquel, Argentina.

Hostal Las Natalias‘ super friendly bilingual owners Nathaniel & Nancy made their dream come true and built a real backpacker’s hostel, located in a quiet spot just a 7 to 10 minute walk from the plaza in Futaleufú.
The gorgeous hostel offers breakfast and also has a spacious kitchen and living room to hang out, relax and make friends from all over the world. The location is amazing with spectacular views and the place is so serene!
Las Natalias has 3 dorm rooms and 4 private rooms (2 with en ensuite bathrooms). Enjoy the natural climbing wall next to the hostel, take whitewater kayak lessons with Nathaniel and ask him, or his ever popular mom, for more info about local culture, rafting, canyoning, trekking, horseback riding, fishing and much more.

You won’t have to wear out your boots to get to Los Abuelos as it’s located right in Futa’s centre, where the international bus from Argentina arrives/departs. This outfit is a recommendable adventure company run by real Futa locals alongside a team of international pro guides. Unless you have a phobia of water it’s mandatory to sign up for Futa’s world-famous rafting or kayak adventures (half or full day). In addition to tackling the thundering rivers, Outdoor Patagonia organises fun bike tours (also rental) and exciting treks! Operating daily from November to April. Rest of the year: when enough people sign up.
Also on offer is a brand-new cosy hostel, open from December till May, with four 3-bed dorms, a handy kitchen and a cool outdoor climbing wall.
